Abstract

When done for recreational purposes, much beauty can be found in the practice of martial arts. It is probably for this reason that many people think that the expert practice of a martial art, like Japanese Ninjutsu, constitutes a bona fide art form. But does it? In this paper, both sides of the issue will be argued. The argument in favor is based upon a more traditional, aesthetics-based analysis, whereas the argument against employs theoretical insights offered by the new institutional theory of art. As the new institutional theory offers tools for the most precise definition and classification of works of art, the theory is employed so as to precisely examine the issue at hand, and see whether Ninjutsu really is a true art form.
