Abstract

This paper investigates the current nature of the institution of marriage and the practice of divorce in Japan with reference to historical trends and shows a special concern for legal and ethical issues affecting the status of the custodial parent and the serious matter of support. Attention is drawn to the generalized outcome of the divorce process in Japan and the need for reform.
