Abstract

There are innumerable sayings attributed to Jesus in New Testament (NT), in apocrypha and in other sources, patristic and non-Christian. This chapter examines two nouns from standpoint of Mark's Gospel that seem to describe Jesus' proclamation. The nouns are λόγος and eύαγγέλιον. It is commonly thought they are capable of bearing same meaning, namely Christian teaching. The chapter looks at both of them in turn and explores that there has been a change in meaning, introduced by church, a revolution in vocabulary visible even within one Gospel. Among many dictionary definitions of word λόγος in NT are declaration, speech, the subject-matter, revelation. There are 76 occurrences of eύαγγέλιον in NT, most of which are to be found in Pauline Epistles. Keywords: Jesus; Mark's Gospel; New Testament; Pauline Epistles
