Abstract

Marie-Jeanne Amelie Harlay was born in Paris in 1768 and married at twenty Michel Jean Jerome Lefrancais de Lalande (1766–1839), grandson of the famous astronomer Joseph-Jerome Lalande, who was an astronomer like his uncle. They had a daughter and her celebrated great-uncle wrote: “This son of astronomy was born on January 20, 1790, a day where we saw in Paris for the first time the comet discovered by Miss Caroline Herschel; the child was then given the name of Carolina; his godfather was Delambre.”
