Abstract

Social media open the chance to observe communication behavior of direct candidates in North Rhine-Westphalia during the German federal elections 2017. The right-wing populistic party AfD is new to the party system in Germany. Anti-elite attitude is part of populist campaigns. By observing the following behavior on Twitter we detect the distinction between right-wing populists and other parties within the German party system. The theoretical background is set with modern and classical elitism theories, deriving the necessary condition for our model. The model itself distinguishes between standard and anti-elite behavior during the campaign. With the help of the method of Social Network Analysis (SNA) we test our hypothesis and explore our data.
