Abstract
RATIONALE: A small subset of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) experience widespread cutaneous infections with herpes simplex virus called eczema herpeticum (EH) and are also characterized by more severe disease. Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) is an acute phase reactant important for activation of the alternative complement pathway, which is a mechanism for viral clearance. MBL deficiencies have been associated with increased susceptibility to infections, and altered severity of autoimmune and other diseases.
