Abstract

We demonstrated the magnetic manipulation of NIH3T3 mouse fibroblast cells transfected with purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The SWNTs were functionalized by using simple acid treatment. Introducing defects and adding functional groups into the SWNTs increased the solubility and induced ferromagnetic behavior in the functionalized SWNTs (fSWNTs). The uptake of the fSWNTs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cytotoxicity was reduced because of the removal of metallic impurities during functionalization. Cells with soluble magnetic fSWNTs were attracted and aligned in the direction of the magnetic source. Our findings may lead to improvement in non-invasive and non-toxic drug delivery as well as targeted cell therapy with fSWNTs.
