Abstract

By thermodynamic-diagram analysis of the BaO-SiO2-MnO-FeO and Ba-Si-Mn-Fe systems, technological principles are developed for the production of a manganese-based alloy that may be used in the modification of steel with barium. This alloy is a nonstandard form of silicomanganese with 1.5–10% Ba. It may be produced from sulfate barite ore mined in Kazakhstan, by single-stage slag-free reduction in the presence of carbon. The alloy is intended for use in the manufacture of high-performance metal products.
