Abstract
In acromegaly there is a bony enlargement of the supraorbital regions and mandible. Narrowing of the mandible was achieved by removing a vertical wedge from the symphysis and sagittal splits of both rami. Bone grafts were used to fill in defects and accelerate union. Fixation was achieved by silver cap splints with quick release devices. The operation was technically satisfactory but 7 days postoperatively the patient succumbed to a pulmonary embolism arising from the deep veins of the left thigh. The possible contributory factors are discussed, and a method of prevention of venous stasis considered.
