Abstract
This chapter reveals the truth about the Manchurian Incident, a conspiracy by the Kwantung Army, through newly declassified diplomatic archives and oral history of those who were directly involved in the incident, and reviews how this incident opened the way for the Japanese invasion of the entire region of Manchuria (China’s Northeast) and its effects on the civil war between the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Zhou Enlai’s career. This chapter also presents an accurate account of Zhou’s leadership role in the CPC during the Long March to Yan’an in Shaanxi province.
