Abstract
This chapter focuses on the role of human security in managing transitions and building peace in conflict-affected societies. I first revisit the debates surrounding the liberal peacebuilding agenda and how international peacebuilding evolved from the ideological promotion of liberal values to practical implementation of building and strengthening national and local institutions. I then situate the concept of human security within the local turn in peacebuilding and explain how a human security approach to peacebuilding departs from the international/liberal-local divide by centering on human welfare and dignity. Finally, I explore ways for integrating ecological considerations into the human security peacebuilding agenda amidst global environmental challenges.
