Abstract

The development of automated library systems and in particular the evolution of the cataloguer's desktop has dramatically changed the daily physical work routine of staff in Technical Services, leaving staff vulnerable to the risks of repetitive strain injuries (RSI). Many libraries are now taking steps to prevent and minimise the risks of repetitive strain injuries in the workplace by addressing ergonomic issues. This article describes the nature of repetitive strain injuries, discusses the current occupational health and safety issues surrounding work in Technical Services departments, and outlines an approach to preventing and minimising the risks of RSI in Technical Services departments by adjusting not only the furniture, but adopting an extensive organisational approach. This article advocates addressing ergonomic issues surrounding the employee, the department, and the organisation in an overall strategy to create an optimal work environment.
