Abstract

Chickenpox is caused by a virus that spreads easily to people with no previous immunity. It is a common illness that most children will catch at some point in childhood, and causes an itchy, spotty rash that clears up in 1–2 weeks. For most children there are no associated complications; however, there are risks for pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems ( National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), 2016 ).
