Abstract

Conservation efforts have traditionally focused on two main themes: preservation of endangered species and establishment of biological reserves (Fox 1981). Yet, there are too many species to be saved one-at-a-time, and any reserve system is inadequate to preserve the biotas of entire continents, especially in the face of global changes in climate and land use.
