Abstract
Introduction: Lentigo maligna (LM) a premalignant melanocytic lesion that often develops in sun damaged skin whilst lentigo malignant melanoma is a subtype of malignant invasive melanoma. The incidence of melanocytic malignancy is on the increase. Clinical margins of LM are often poorly defined. The British Association of Dermatology (BAD) guidelines recommend a 2-5mm excision margin for LM and a 10mm margin for lentigo maligna melanoma. A study in 2002 suggests that a 5mm margin is not sufficient in lentigo maligna, as only 42% of tumours were cleared after a 5mm margin.
