Abstract
Chronic pain is a complex phenomenon that involves sensory, behavioural, cognitive and affective dimensions. Multidisciplinary pain management programmes are emerging that use a cognitive—behavioural approach, involving strategies that have evolved from an improved understanding of the theories associated with each dimension. Chronic pain is an important health-care issue, and the aim of this article is to highlight the challenge that it presents to health-care workers.
