Abstract

Introduction: The most common complication of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is retear, and retear or failure to heal is more common in larger tears in older patients. We hypothesised that the quality of the torn tendon is important in protecting against retear. Surgeons have traditionally assessed the quality of repaired tissue with a four-point Likert scale. Shear Wave Elastography Ultrasound (SWEUS) is a recent technological advancement which can quantify soft tissue stiffness. The aim of this study was to determine how closely a surgeon’s intraoperative rankings of tissue quality correlate to postoperative supraspinatus tendon stiffness as measured by SWEUS.
