Abstract

In the UK, recent government papers have attempted to give choice, continuity and control over childbirth choices to women. Maternity care has been dominated by the medical establishment, which in turn is dominated by men with midwives and women seen in the traditional female powerless role of the caring nurturing woman. Midwives and women will need education at a more fundamental level to effect attitude changes if women are to be empowered through childbirth.
