Abstract

Malathion sprays protected stored inshell walnuts for 8–12 months from damage by the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hubner), the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), the confused flour beetle, T. confusum Jacquelin duVal, the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), and the merchant grain beetle, O. mercator (Fauvel). Residues of the highest dose, 29.6 ppm, averaged 3.5 ppm after 12 months. Movement of malathion from the shells into the nutmeats was slow, and residues of the material in the nutmeats never exceeded 1.1 ppm. Taste panels found no significant difference in odor or flavor between treated and untreated walnuts.
