Abstract

With the emergence of information technology, widespread and sophisticated automation has become a practical option for firms across a wide range of industrial sectors. The skills and responsibilities required at all levels are moving towards the pattern already experienced in the advanced process industries. In particular there will be a reduction of the direct, day-to-day involvement of those responsible for operation and maintenance:.this must be compensated for in the design stage. Automation also raises questions about the adaptiveness of organisations in moving to more integrated forms of operation. It is argued that the training process represents an excellent vehicle for developing this flexibility.
