Abstract
ABSTRACT Ecomodernism and its implications for the politics of the Anthropocene are increasingly debated. Yet both its specificities and its guiding principles remain underdeveloped. I argue that ecomodernism is distinguishable from two environmental discourses which are commonly conflated with it – ecological modernization and conventional Prometheanism. To sharpen ecomodernist thought, I establish knowledge creation and diffusion as well as ecological reflexivity as two core commitments for reinventing existing environmental states. I argue that strategies such as rational consumption of energy and meat should complement technological innovation to accelerate decoupling processes to avert the ecological crisis. My argument advances the understanding and development of ecomodernism as a renewed imaginative and reformist politics of sustainability.
