Abstract

Water treatment plants are operated and monitored to ensure that high‐quality drinking water is delivered through their distribution systems. However, a wide range of factors can degrade water quality as it travels through a distribution system to customers. Further, contaminants can enter a distribution system through backflow events, cross‐connections, infiltration, and treatment pass‐through. Although rare, such incidents can result in drinking water that's unacceptable to customers and can potentially cause public health crises.
