Abstract

As a tool for acquaintance with a foreign culture, translation plays the most important role, since it crosses not only the boundaries of languages, but also the boundaries of cultures, and the text created in the course of this process is shifted to the system of another culture with the help of its language. Because the language is deeply immersed in the culture and they are inseparable. Recognizing the undeniable influence of cultural factors on the process of translation, we can simply assume that “Not languages but cultures are translated”. Thus, the process of translation requires from the translator to have not only the grammar and lexical knowledge of the language but also the cultural understanding. In addition to this, religious and geographical aspects are also in concern. All of these elements may create difficulties in translation and they may lead some words to be left untranslated, changed or omitted. In this article, these problems will be discussed through explanations of some examples from the Novel “Night and Day” by Cho`lpon along with its translated version by Christopher Fort.
