Summary
In Malawi and Mozambique the major food staples are maize, rice and cassava. These are followed by wheat, millet, sorghum and potatoes. In both countries the smallholder subsector cultivates most of the land and produces most of the food crops. This subsector is characterized by small land holdings of 0.5–1.8 ha in Malawi and Mozambique. Maize is the most informally traded staple commodity in Southern Africa, and in particular between Malawi and Mozambique (World Food Programme & FEWSNET, 2007).
