Abstract

The magnetostriction studies were carried out on a thin nickel strip sample using strain gauge method. The negative magnetostriction of nickel has been observed in the perpendicular configuration with a saturation magnetostriction (λs) value of ~100 ppm. The magnetostriction study of the same sample has been carried out in the parallel configuration as well, in which, an increase in magnetostriction (λ) value from −2.8 to +6.3 is observed. A clear saturation of λ is not observed and the positive value of λ can be interpreted as the effect of reduction in magnetic anisotropy due to in-plane aligned magnetic moments. The process of annealing has removed the residual strain present in the material and could reduce the pre-stress effects up to certain extent.[copy right information to be updated in production process]
