Abstract

We have investigated the magnetostriction and coercivity of b.c.c. FeCoRE (RE, rare earth elements) alloys prepared by d.c. triode sputtering. An addition of the RE elements Pr and Tb was found to increase the magnetostriction value, while the addition of RE elements Ce, Nd, Sm and Er decreased it. All alloys exhibited a high saturation magnetization value, greater than 200 e.m.u.g −1, which occurred on addition of a small percentage of the RE elements into b.c.c. Fe 70Co 30.
