Abstract

We report on magneto-optical studies of interactions between Josephson vortices and pancake vortex stacks in Bi 2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals under tilted magnetic fields. The experiment reveals a strong coupling between the two vortex subsystems over a wide range of crossing fields and temperatures. Variations of the anisotropy across the samples are estimated from the field dependencies of the Josephson vortex periods. A stepwise shape of these dependencies reveals transitions between non-equilibrium Josephson vortex configurations. Characteristic defects in the Josephson vortex lattice and interactions of the Josephson stacks with crystal imperfections are observed. The results are discussed based on the recent theoretical predictions for crossing vortex lattices in strongly anisotropic layered superconductors.
