Abstract

Factors that determine the chemical stability and long term usability of thin amorphous rare earth transition metal (RETM) alloys as a memory media in the field of magneto-optical data storage are reviewed. The effect of crystallization temperature, structural relaxation, corrosion susceptibility, and aging behavior of RETM layers on magneto optical properties are discussed.
