Abstract

Abstract Magnetomechanical damping results have varied between investigators who in the main have neglected to mention the physical and chemical conditions of the specimens. In an attempt to normalize this picture magnetic damping in nickel has been investigated over a range of temperature and strain amplitude. The damping was found to increase with decreasing temperature in agreement with the results of Roberts and Barrand (1967). Factors which affect the damping include plastic deformation and grain size. Deformation which increases internal stress decreases magnetomechanical damping and it is necessary to use separate specimens for such experiments to minimize this effect. Damping increases with grain size up to a grain size of 3 × 10−3 cm, above which the rate of increase is very small.
