ferromagnetism and the similarity of both compounds having particular molecular orbitalsnear EF and difference, i.e. absence of three fold degeneracy in the energy bands of CaB2C2, waspointed out. In thiswork, high quality CaB 2C2 crystalline powder was synthesized from pure elements and the magnetism investigated. We discover that contrary to the previousreport, CaB 2C2 isdiamagnetic at room temperature. It should also be taken note that, recently we have studied single crystals of lanthanum doped CaB6 and found that samples exhibiting ferromagnetism contained iron impuritiesand after application of certain was hing procedures the ferromagnetism disappears (and correspondingly the iron concentration drops). 3) CaB2C2 was synthesized by a closed environment reaction method which hasbeen us ed previous ly to successfully synthesize borides and borocarbides with constituents having relatively high evaporation rates. 4,5) Well mixed Ca metal powder (99.9%), amorphousboron powder (99.9%), and carbon powder (99.9%) were pressed into small pellets and loaded and sealed into Ta cells.
