Abstract

We consider the multiple spin density wave states of an itinerant model of a face centred cubic antiferromagnet. By investigating the total energies in the Hartree-Fock approximation and the susceptibility and higher order Green's functions in the random phase approximation we examine the transitions between the various MSDW phases. We show that for a special type of phase transition in which the spin components reorientate themselves we can have softening of phonons and the corresponding shear elastic constant in agreement with existing experiments. We suggest further experimental verification of our model.
