Abstract
Magnetic storm associated changes in the total electron content above Hawaii are investigated. After carefully discussing the method of analysis it is demonstrated that the typical effects seen at this low-latitude station are an initial increase followed by a decrease and are thus similar to those observed at mid-latitudes. A possible explanation for positive storm effects is electrodynamic lifting, whereas negative storm effects are almost certainly caused by changes in the neutral composition due to atmospheric disturbances originating in the polar zones.
