Abstract

PET/MRI is a rapidly evolving technique that takes advantage of its constituent modalities. MRI is unparalleled in evaluation bone marrow and soft tissues. PET assesses metabolic properties of tissues and continues to find new applications as novel radiopharmaceuticals are developed. Despite currently limited evidence for musculoskeletal application of PET/MRI, the combined strength of these constituent modalities underscores the importance of future work on this topic. In particular, PET/MRI is expected to play a major role in evaluating both primary musculoskeletal malignancies as well as bone and bone marrow metastases. It may also overcome some of the challenges that imaging faces while evaluating benign conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteomyelitis.
