Abstract

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed for La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 single crystal doped intentionally with 3 wt% of Sm3+ ions. X-band EPR measurements have been carried out with covering the field range 0–1.4 T and the temperature range 3–300 K. It has been found that two magnetically inequivalent sites having at least C2 symmetry are responsible for the EPR spectra. The static magnetization measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field have been done using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The field and temperature dependences of magnetization are measured in zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) regimes in an applied field of 100 Oe. It is seen from magnetization measurements that the strong coupling regime is due to the presence of a strong coupling of the Sm3+ ions to the lattice of LGT crystals.
