Abstract

Magnetic polarization of Au layers in Au/M (M=Fe, Co, and Ni) metallic multilayers are studied by 119 Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. 119 Sn Mössbauer probes are embedded in the Au layers of Au/M multilayers which are made by ultra-high vacuum evaporation. 119 Sn Mössbauer spectra of all Au/M multilayers show magnetic hyperfine fields though the magnitude is different among these three systems, which indicates that the Au layers are magnetically polarized by the ferromagnetic layers. When Au layer thickness is thin, the 119 Sn probes in the Au/Co multilayers experience the largest hyperfine field. From the Mössbauer spectra with applied fields at 5 K, the direction of the hyperfine field is determined to be both parallel and antiparallel to the applied field direction, suggesting the oscillatory behavior of the magnetic polarization of the Au layer conduction electrons.
