Abstract
The magnetic permeability of a high current pinched plasma discharge with respect to an externally applied helical magnetic field is studied. Depending on the current distribution within the plasma, the discharge can be either para- or diamagnetic to the external helical field. Quantitative dependence of this phenomenon on the plasma parameter is examined both for force free and for high beta helical plasmas.
