Abstract

We present measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and paramagnetic resonance of K 3Nd 2(NO 3) 9, a cubic system containing four nonequivalent Nd 3+ sites having threefold rotational symmetry along (111) and equivalent axes. Paramagnetic resonance reveals g factors very similar to those of Nd 2Mg 3(NO 3) 12×24H 2O, indicating that the ion ground state, and hence the crystal field, is very similar in the two cases. The magnetic susceptibility indicates that exchange is antiferromagnetic, and exhibits an antiferromagnetic ordering feature near T=40 mK.
