Abstract

We report a magnetic thin film of single-nanosize Δ-Fe2O3 in SiO2 matrix. The glass-film was prepared by sintering a silica coated iron oxide hydroxide on a quartz substrate in air. The glass-film consists of Δ-Fe2O3 of 8.8 nm size, and its thickness was 570 nm (0.57 Όm) with a roughness of 10 nm (0.01 Όm). UV-vis spectrum showed that the glass-film has small absorbance of 0.043 at 500 nm. The magneto-optical effect was investigated, and Faraday ellipticity showed a magnetic hysteresis loop with a coercive field of 3.0 ± 0.2 kOe. Furthermore, single-nanosize Δ-Fe2O3 without silica was prepared as a reference sample, and ferroelectricity was observed. Therefore, the present thin glass-film consists of single-nanosize ferroelectric-ferromagnetic nanoparticles.

Highlights

  • Magnetic films have been used as magnetic recording media and magneto-optical devices.[1,2,3,4]

  • We draw our attention to epsilon-iron oxide (Δ-Fe2O3). Δ-Fe2O3 is known to exhibit a large coercive field (Hc) and high frequency millimeter wave absorption,[10,11,12] and various scientific researches have been reported from the aspects of magnetism and spectroscopic properties, such as Mossbauer spectrometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and Raman spectrometry.[13,14,15,16,17,18] Δ-Fe2O3 does not exist in nature, and a specific chemical synthetic procedure is necessary to prepare this phase.[19]

  • TEOS was added and stirred for 20 hours, and a colloidal solution was obtained. This precursor colloidal solution was spin-coated on a quartz substrate with 1000 rpm for 10 seconds and was repeated 27 times

Summary

Introduction

Magnetic films have been used as magnetic recording media and magneto-optical devices.[1,2,3,4] For example, magnetic film composed of magnetic nanoparticles in organic polymer is used as magnetic recording tapes.[5,6,7,8] Glass consisting dispersed magnetic material, i.e., magnetic glass, is expected to be useful for applications as various magnetic devices or optical devices due to its hardness.[9].
