Abstract
In this paper, the magnetic force acting on the currents induced in a nonmagnetic ring of finite cross section, taking into account the presence of eddy currents, is determined by the use of Laplace's force formula. The required magnetic flux and current densities are obtained from vector potential values evaluated by a hybrid finite-element/boundary-element method. The magnetic flux density is found from the potentials using a linear operator capable of yielding accurate results notwithstanding the discrete nature of the problem. Equivalent results obtained by the virtual-work principle are presented for comparison.
