Abstract

We compare the experimentally observed magnetic excitations in La2CuO4 with those calculated for a square lattice spin-12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find that the short-wavelength spin-pair excitation spectrum deduced from light scattering, and the long wavelength spin-wave dispersion deduced from neutron scattering are both consistent with a nearest neighbor model with the exchange constant J of about 1500 K.
