Abstract
A study is reported of the reasons for the magnetic desulphurisation of coal after microwave irradiation in a caustic slurry. X-ray diffraction, EDAX, ESCA and magnetic susceptibility studies were carried out on both mineral pyrite and the magnetic concentrate from coal after irradiation by microwaves of 2.45 GHz at 500 w for up to 40 seconds in the presence of 300 g/litre NaOH. The possible nature of the magnetic phase is discussed in terms of the Eh-pH diagram but no positive identification proved possible.
