Abstract
To develop a macroscale effective and convenient carbon-supported cobaltic catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), a composite material of Co/Fe nanohybrid supported on carbon macrosphere (CFCMS) is prepared using polymeric resin-supported cobalt-bearing Prussian Blue (PB) (PB@resin) as a precursor which is carbonized to afford CFCMS. The Co/Fe nanohybrid derived from carbonized PB nanocrystals enables the surface of CMS to exhibit porosity. The XRD analysis of CFCMS indicates that CFCMS is mainly comprised of CoFe2O4 and Co0, which enables CFCMS to exhibit a saturation magnetization of 22 emu g−1. These features make CFCMS a promising material for activating PMS. As Rhodamine B (RhB) decolorization is used as a model test for evaluating PMS activation, CFCMS is shown to exhibit a much higher catalytic activity than Co3O4. Through investigating effects of radical inhibitors, RhB degradation by CFCMS-activated PMS can be primarily attributed to sulfate radicals. Furthermore, CFCMS is also re-used to activate PMS for RhB decolorization over many cycles. These results indicate that CFCMS is a conveniently prepared and versatilely metal-containing carbon-based macrosphere for aqueous chemical oxidative reactions. The preparation method shown here can be also used to fabricate other functional CMS for various liquid-based catalytic reactions.
