Abstract

The X-ray photoelectron spectra, the ESR spectra and the reflection spectra of (BEDT-TTF)CuCl2 complex were measured. The analysis of the X-ray photoelectron spectra shows that the Cu atoms in (BEDT-TTF)CuCl2 are in a mixed-valence state consisting of mono- and bi-valent cations and the concentration ratio of Cu(I) and Cu(II) is determined to be 2:1. The ESR signals show the presence of BEDT-TTF cation radical and Cu(II)Cl2. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of these components were obtained from the ESR data. The polarized reflection spectra of the crystal show the CT2 band at 4000 cm-1 and the CT1 band in the vicinity of 11000 cm-1 . The results of the analysis of the ESR and reflection spectra support the presence of the mixed valence state.
