Abstract
Abstract Close packing of soft spheres, each standing for the envelope of both ions in an alkali-halide molecule and forming nested octahedral shells, is proposed for the structure of alkali-halide microclusters (magic numbers: 6, 14, 18, 20, 24, 30, 32, 38, …). Thus the structure for low photon energy of ionization corresponds to a metastable structure which is transformed into a nested icosahedral-shell ground-state structure (magic numbers: 7, 10, 13, 17, 19, 25, …).
