Abstract

The Universal Product Code (UPC) symbol is appearing on mass circulation periodicals sold in supermarkets. A description of the UPC and comments about magazine sales in supermarkets are presented. The relationship between the UPC, supermarkets, and periodicals and serials sold in supermarkets is illustrated with a short survey taken in a college town during August and September 1976. As a coding system already utilizing the ISBN in the symbol marking ofpaperbacks, the relationship of the UPC to serials may also h u e an impact upon serials librarianship.
