Abstract
During the initial phase of an inflammatory reaction, a factor increasing monocytopoiesis (FIM)1 in the bone marrow was found in the serum of mice. FIM is a protein without essential carbohydrates, has no colony stimulating activity, and is cell-line specific. The decrease in the number of monocytes during the second phase of an inflammatory response is probably governed by another humoral factor (monocyte production inhibitor, MPI)2.
