Abstract

The design practices used within small special purpose machine design companies often mean that they produce machines that are tailored for the specific requirements of a customer. This can lead to an unnecessarily large family of machines, supported with large sets of change parts. However, the resources are often not available to investigate the design fully and obtain an understanding of its functionality. This paper proposes an approach that offers both the ability to visualize and explore the space of feasible design solutions and the potential to rationalize designs.
