Abstract
This chapter examines the reign of King Peter I of Cyprus (1359-1369), historians have to confront the problems inherent in using the surviving medieval narratives. The accounts by Philippe de Mezieres, Guillaume de Machaut, Leontios Makhairas and the anonymous author of the work known as the Chronique d'Amadi stand out as the most important descriptions of Peter's reign. But they are not the only ones: mention might for example be made of Jean Froissart who wrote about Peters first visit to the West, or those historians who wrote in Arabic in the Mamluk sultanate, and who from their own different perspective put on record the sack of Alexandria and the subsequent war with the Mamluk sultanate. These four writers, however, provide more than enough material for the present chapter. Keywords: Alexandria; Chronique d'Amadi ; Guillaume de Machaut; Jean Froissart; King Peter I of Cyprus; Leontios Makhairas; Mamluk sultanate; Philippe de Mezieres
