Abstract

Social media is just over ten years old and while initially designed to be a tool for connecting with family and friends, it has emerged as a professional tool for surgeons, facilitating learning, networking, mentoring, research collaboration and information dissemination across traditional barriers of medical specialty, geography and seniority. Once cautioned against the professional use of social media, surgeons are now using social media with great enthusiasm to advance professional goals.
