Abstract
The results of a simple calculation of the M shell ionization probability in α decay are presented. The sudden approximation has been used with non-relativistic hydrogen-like wave functions and an attempt is made to estimate the likely result of such a calculation using relativistic self-consistent field wave functions. The predicted M X-ray yield is about half of the experimental value and is close to the recent theoretical result of Hansen.
